Another victim comes forward against Rowan County teacher

Authorities have filed an additional charge against a Rowan County middle school math teacher and Boy Scout leader who is accused of taking indecent liberties with preteens.

James Paul Barringer, 51, of Salisbury, was initially charged this month with six counts of taking indecent liberties with a child.

According to the China Grove Middle School website, Barringer taught eighth-grade math.

Rowan County sheriff’s investigators said the sexual activity happened over two years and involved multiple victims.

The new charge stems from a 1995 incident at an overnight church activity at a church in China Grove, investigators said this week.

The victim, who was a juvenile in 1995, told authorities he was inappropriately sexually touched. Investigators charged Barringer with an additional count of taking felony indecent liberties with a child as a result, and Barringer was jailed under a $25,000 bond.

Investigators encourage anyone with information about Barringer or other potential victims to call Detective Sara Benfield at 704-216-8739 or Lt. Chad Moose at 704-216-8687.
