Knights salvage doubleheader with grand slam by Sanchez

LOUISVILLE, Ky. Carlos Sanchez’s grand slam helped the Charlotte Knights salvage a split in Sunday’s doubleheader, beating Louisville 6-4 in the second game. The Knights were shut out in the first game 5-0.

The home run by Sanchez came in the third inning and gave the Knights (49-61) a 4-0 lead. Sanchez and Marcus Semien were each 2-for-4. Starter Erik Johnson (5-6) allowed eight hits and four walks but managed the win.

The first game was resumed from Saturday with the Bats (53-57) ahead 4-0 after four innings. Andy Wilkins (2-for-3) and Miguel Gonzalez (2-for-2) accounted for four of the Knights’ five hits.

South Atlantic

Hickory 13, Delmarva 10: The Crawdads outslugged the visiting Shorebirds, utilizing 12 hits and four home runs. Joe Jackson led Hickory, going 4-for-5 with a triple, double, three RBIs and two runs scored.

Kannapolis 7-6, Lakewood 3-3: Kannapolis bounced back from blowing a late lead to beat the host BlueClaws in extra innings and complete a doubleheader sweep. Adam Engel’s two-run triple in the top of the ninth scored two, and Jose Brito buckled down on the mound secure the win.

In the first game, Jeff McKenzie tossed his career-first complete game (seven innings) to lead Kannapolis. He opened with five scoreless innings, at one point retiring 12 straight batters.
