Sun Valley’s Pickett named 3A West softball pitcher of the year

Sun Valley pitcher Brittany Pickett was named the 3A West Pitcher of the Year by the N.C. Softball Coaches Association.

Pickett, a rising junior, was also named state championship Most Valuable Player after leading Sun Valley to a 2-0 series sweep of Charles B. Aycock High in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3A state championship.

Several other Union County softball players also were named to NCSCA all-state teams.

•  2A: Allyson High, Forest Hills; Bailey Morton, Parkwood.

•  3A: Madeline Boigner and Jessica Curtis, Marvin Ridge; Sarah Tucker, Mel Garcia, Tristyn Edwards, Jess VonCannon, Hayleigh Gimber and Cristi Pressley, Piedmont; Hannah Adamczyk and Brittany Picket (3A West pitcher of the year), Sun Valley; Haley Chilcott, Jordan Keene, Ragan Broome and Annarose Borrelli, Weddington.

•  4A: Katie Brock, Haylee Kobziak and Kate Owsley, Cuthbertson; Hallie Rice, Kayleigh Jonas and Hannah Smith, Porter Ridge.
