Today’s traffic: Congestion on I-77 southbound

The typical morning commute congestion is slowing traffic on southbound Interstate 77 at 9 a.m. Wednesday, and that is the biggest current problem for motorists in the Charlotte region.

Slowdowns are being reported from south of Mooresville down to Huntersville, and traffic volume is the reason.

At 9 a.m. N.C. Department of Transportation crews will close the heavily used Union County intersection of Weddington Road (N.C. 84) and Airport Road, southwest of Monroe.

That intersection will be closed for about six weeks, until around Sept. 8, so crews can convert the junction to a traffic roundabout. A detour has been posted, using five different roads. Motorists should allow an extra 5-10 minutes for travel in that area.

Here is the 9 a.m. update:

Construction

N.C. 84 at Airport Road, west of Monroe ... Intersection being closed at 9 a.m. so work can begin on a traffic roundabout. Detour route posted.

North

I-77 southbound, Lake Norman area ... Congestion; traffic moving 20-30 mph from Brawley School Road (Exit 35) down to Gilead Road (Exit 23).

Catawba Avenue, west of I-77 ... Collision; moderate delays.

Southeast

I-485 inner loop, south Mecklenburg ... Congestion; traffic moving 25-35 mph from Providence Road to I-77.

Selwyn Road at Queens Road West ... Collision with injuries; moderate to heavy delays.

Independence Boulevard inbound ... Congestion; traffic moving 20-25 mph from Eastway Drive to uptown.

Johnston Road ... Congestion; traffic moving 15-25 mph northbound from the state line to I-485.

South

Fairview Road at Sharon Road ... Collision; minor delays.

York County

Gold Hill Road, west of I-77, near Fort Mill ... Collision; minor delays.
