Carolina Panthers’ Frank Alexander won’t fight 4-game suspension

SPARTANBURG Carolina Panthers defensive end Frank Alexander wouldn’t identify what substance led to his four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, but he said he won’t appeal the punishment.

“It ain’t nothing to appeal, because I did it,” Alexander said. “So what’s to appeal, you know?”

Alexander, a third-year player out of Oklahoma, learned of the suspension in May. He can participate in camp and exhibitions with the team and is eligible to return after Carolina’s Week 4 game at Baltimore.

He said he was disappointed, and that his coaches and teammates have told him to be smarter and continue to work hard. Alexander, who has started six games and totaled 3 1/2 sacks in his career, said the thought of messing up a second time has scared him straight.

“That runs through your head: one more slip up and it’ll be a year out,” Alexander said. “And most times when guys are out for a year, it’s hard to come back from that. It’s an eye-opening experience, and I just got to be smarter from here on out.”
