A lion at the North Carolina Zoo recently delivered four cubs, the first lion birth since 2006 at the Asheboro zoo.

The North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro is celebrating the birth of not one, not two but four new lion cubs.

The male cubs were born July 30 and are the first set of baby lions delivered at the zoo since fall of 2006, zoo officials said Wednesday. The cub's parents are Mekita and Reilly.

Officials said the cubs will remain at the zoo for a year, but won't go on display until the fall.

"Male cubs don't stay with their father," Jennifer Ireland, an animal management supervisor said. "In the wild, male cubs leave the pride they are born into."

The zoo is marking World Lion Day on Saturday with an event from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. featuring games, crafts and talks from zoo keepers on lions and the new cubs.
