Last week I was catching up with a fairly new acquaintance when he asked if I had anyone else I could bring with me when visiting schools in his area.

I misunderstood his question, as I thought he was inquiring about the possibility of other bereaved parents joining me to share their stories.  Though I’ve encountered many who’ve lost children over the last six years, only a fraction have ever spoken publicly about their loss.  My mentors Skip and Jerry Mudge retired earlier this year, so I told him these days, I’m pretty much on my own.

He patiently listened and then clarified his query… Specifically, he wanted to know if I was friends with anyone famous who would be willing to join me in speaking to teens…

I’ve met several local television news anchors since 2008, but that’s the extent of it.  I don’t know anyone with ‘celebrity’ status…

I certainly don’t qualify, nor do I want to…

While I’ve no doubt that someone of greater importance and more widely recognized would attract a larger audience, that person wouldn’t be me…this isn’t their story.

I am the face and voice of my family…  I’m a regular person, a mom of three…  I’m the neighbor across the street…  I’m the lady behind you in the grocery store…  I’m the woman NOT on her phone at the traffic light…

I’m the anonymous parent you never wish to be, doing all that I can to prevent another tragedy…

After sharing Brian’s Story on any given day, I couldn’t care less if anyone remembers me…  My goal is for them to remember the message.  I want them to realize this happened to an actual person from their community, a real family, an ordinary mom, someone just like any other they happen to know…

Because I’m no one special, I don’t have to worry about the message being eclipsed by the messenger…

As school will be resuming in just a few short weeks, please consider sharing the following link with Brian’s Story and PSA as a reminder to your loved ones to put their phones away while driving.  Help us change the world, one person at a time!

Wishing you blessings and hope…

Tammy will update her blog weekly…
