A crash knocked down power lines Monday morning on Freedom Drive near Enderly Road. That closed Freedom Drive in both directions, although police were able to keep traffic moving by detouring motorists through a nearby parking lot.

An overturned garbage truck on Shadow Pond Lane at Rea Road, north of Pineville-Matthews Road, has created a slowdown for commuters Monday morning. No injuries were reported, though.

Traffic conditions are returning to normal across the Charlotte region this Monday morning, but police are still working to clear a couple of trouble spots.

The only congestion-related slowdown is on southbound Interstate 77, with slow traffic in the Huntersville-Cornelius area.

However, a wreck with injuries is causing traffic delays on Rama Road in southeast Charlotte, and a portion of Freedom Drive in west Charlotte is closed because of downed power lines. In Charlotte’s uptown, a collision with injuries has been reported at College and Sixth streets. That crash is causing moderate delays.

The Rama Road wreck is near Charing Place. Moderate delays are being reported in that area.

On Freedom Drive, the lines are down between Enderly Road and Alleghany Drive. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are diverting traffic through the parking lot of a nearby shopping center.

An earlier problem with an overturned truck on Shadow Pond Lane at Rea Road, north of Pineville-Matthews Road, has been moved out of the travel lanes. Only minor delays are being reported in that area, and no one was injured. But the truck leaked some diesel fuel, so a hazardous materials team is needed to clean the spill.

Here is the 10:10 a.m. traffic update:

Construction

Marvin Road ... The road will be closed at 9 a.m., between Johnston and Ardrey Kell roads, through Aug. 22. Crews are installing a new pipe under the road. A detour will be posted from Marvin Road to Johnston Road to Ardrey Kell Road and back to Marvin Road.

Brixham Hill Avenue (formerly John J. Delaney Drive) at Don Lochman Lane and Conlan Circle ... Motorists no longer can make left turns at this intersection onto Brixham Hill Avenue because a median was installed Saturday. Motorists traveling south on Don Lochman Lane or north on Conlan Circle can only make right turns onto Brixham Hill Avenue.

Center City

North College Street at East Sixth Street ... Collision with injuries; moderate delays.

North Kings Drive at East Fourth Street ... Collision; moderate delays.

North

I-77 southbound, Lake Norman area ... Congestion, worsened by an earlier collision; traffic moving 25-35 mph from Exit 28 (Cornelius) to Exit 25 (Birkdale).

I-85 southbound, north Charlotte ... Congestion from an earlier collision; traffic moving 30-40 mph from I-485 to Harris Boulevard.

Southeast

Rea Road, between N.C. 51 and Colony Road, near Shadow Pond Lane ... Overturned truck, although the truck is not blocking travel lanes; moderate delays.

Rama Road at Charing Place, between Monroe Road and Sardis Road ... Collision with injuries; minor to moderate delays.

West

Freedom Drive at Enderly Drive ... Collision with downed power lines, blocking all lanes of Freedom Drive; traffic being diverted through a shopping center parking lot; heavy delays.

Cabarrus County

Poplar Tent Road ... A reminder to motorists that Poplar Tent Road now has a “superstreet” design from west of the Derita Road-Odell School Road intersection to east of Shelton Road. This pattern forces motorists getting on Poplar Tent Road from side streets to make right turns, then use the next U-turn if they need to go in the other direction.

The “superstreet” pattern is designed to improve traffic flow and cut the number of collisions involving motorists pulling out of side roads and trying to cross lanes of traffic.

Brantley Road, Kannapolis ... The closure of Brantley Road over Lake Fisher has been extended indefinitely. The road was to have reopened last Friday, but crews will need additional time to repair the bridge over the lake.

The bridge was closed in July after a routine inspection of the structure showed severe decay in one of the bridge’s timber piles, plus rust and corrosion in parts of the steel girders.
