Carolina Panthers safety Tre Boston (33), shown during a workout last week, returned to the practice field Wednesday after missing most of camp with a sports hernia.

Carolina Panthers rookie free safety Tre Boston returned to practice Wednesday after missing nearly the entire preseason with a sports hernia. Boston, the fourth-round pick from North Carolina, worked mostly on the side with an athletic trainer.

Boston had participated in only one previous preseason practice, during which he aggravated his injury.

Other injury notes:

•  Outside linebacker Chase Blackburn remains sidelined with a back injury, and recently received an injection. Carolina Panthers coach Rom Rivera said Blackburn has been “flat on his back, literally,” but said surgery has not been discussed.

•  Starting cornerback Melvin White was held out after his back stiffened up Wednesday morning.

•  Reserve offensive lineman Andrew McDonald left the two-hour practice early with apparent heat-related symptoms.

•  Backup center Kevin Matthews has missed the past two days with swelling in his knee.
