With no room in the Carolina Panthers’ backfield, running back Kenjon Barner (25) was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles for a conditional seventh-round pick on Tuesday.

Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera called Tuesday’s NFL trade of running back Kenjon Barner to the Philadelphia Eagles a “win-win” for both teams.

Barner, who had fallen behind Fozzy Whittaker and Darrin Reaves with Carolina, gets a fresh start in Philly with Chip Kelly, his former coach at Oregon.

The Panthers received a conditional, seventh-round draft pick in 2015 in exchange for Barner.

“He gets an opportunity to go and play for a head coach that he knows very well, an offense that he’s very comfortable with us,” Rivera said. “For us, it gives us an opportunity to pick up an extra draft pick and at the same time it also sends a message to the two young backs that hey, we’re going to give you guys a clear-cut opportunity to become one of our guys, or both of our guys.”

Rivera said the Panthers would not replace Barner’s roster spot ahead of Tuesday’s first round of cuts, when teams must go from 90 to 75 players.
