Woman killed in head-on Monroe wreck

A 70-year-old Marshville woman was killed Wednesday night and two other people injured in a head-on crash on U.S. 74 in Monroe, authorities say.

Monroe police identified the victim as Laral Leslie Callahan. She died at the scene, authorities said.

The wreck was reported about 8:30 p.m., according to the N.C. Highway Patrol. It took place on the west side of Monroe, near John Moore Road. That’s a short distance west of Rolling Hills Country Club.

A spokesman for Monroe police said a 2013 Dodge Ram truck being driven westbound by Jose Estevez Herrera, 53, of Reidsville, crossed the center median into the eastbound lanes. The truck struck a 2001 Volvo station wagon that was eastbound, police said.

The force of the crash pushed the station wagon into an eastbound tractor-trailer, the spokesman said.

The other person in the Volvo, identified as 64-year-old Paul Randall, suffered serious injuries and was rushed by paramedics to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Herrera also was hospitalized with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Monroe police said the initial investigation indicates that alcohol was involved. The police spokesman said evidence has been turned over to the Union County District Attorney’s Office for a decision on any possible charges.

The wreck closed all of U.S. 74 for more than an hour. The eastbound lanes remained closed until about 12:30 a.m.
