A Burke County man drowned early Sunday after diving into Lake Rhodhiss, authorities say.
The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office said emergency crews recovered the body of Gregory Paul Bordeleau about 8 a.m. Sunday in 35 feet of water. He had been swimming on the Caldwell County side of the reservoir, near the dam.
Authorities said Bordeleau, 40, of Valdese, was among a group of friends who had gone for an early morning swim. He and others were diving about 25 feet into the water around 3:30 a.m., investigators said.
A caller to 911 reported that Bordeleau struck his head on rocks as he dived into the water. The caller said the man went under the water and didn’t resurface. Friends jumped into the water but were unable to find him.
Sheriff Alan Jones said the investigation is continuing, but it appears as if the death was accidental.
