Two games at Washington’s Verizon Center – against Georgetown and George Washington – and a Conference USA opener against Old Dominion highlight the Charlotte 49ers’ men’s basketball schedule.

The 49ers, coming off a 17-14 season, will face the Hoyas on Dec. 20 and their former Atlantic 10 rival Colonials on Dec. 7. The Charlotte-George Washington game is part of the BB&T Classic doubleheader that also includes a matchup between Georgetown and Towson.

“This is one of the most challenging schedules that we have had since we have been in Charlotte,” fifth-year coach Alan Major said in a statement.

Charlotte will open its season Nov. 16 at Elon and will begin its 18-game Conference USA schedule Jan. 4 against ODU at Halton Arena. Charlotte went 7-9 in C-USA last season. The league tournament is March 11-14 in Birmingham, Ala.

Georgetown was 18-15 last season, losing in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament to Florida State. The game is the first of a home-and-home agreement between the schools, with the second to be played next season at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte.

George Washington went 24-9 and was one of six Atlantic 10 teams to play in the NCAA tournament, losing to Memphis in the second round.

Charlotte will also play in the Charleston Classic on Nov. 20-23, opening with a game against Penn State. The 49ers have won their past two early-season tournaments – the Great Alaska Shootout in 2012 and the Puerto Rico Tip-Off last season.

The 49ers will play their annual game against Davidson for the Hornets Nest Trophy on Dec. 3 at the Wildcats’ Belk Arena. Charlotte will also play at Georgia Tech on Dec. 30.

The 49ers’ home schedule includes a visit from Miami on Nov. 25.

Other home games include College of Charleston (Dec. 16), Appalachian State (Dec. 18) and N.C. A&T (Feb. 4). The 49ers will also visit UNC Asheville on Nov. 30.

Major, who has been on a medical leave of absence this summer for procedures on his eyes and heart, is expected to return full-time to work this month.
