A/C goes out, East Rowan High dismissed early

Students were sent home from East Rowan High School on Wednesday morning after the air conditioning system stopped working, according to Rowan-Salisbury Schools officials.

Rita Foil, a spokeswoman for the schools, said shortly after 10 a.m. that the air conditioning unit is being repaired and is expected to be operating soon. But temperatures inside the school got very warm Wednesday morning, and students were dismissed at 10 a.m.

Temperatures dropped only into the low and mid-70s overnight across much of the Carolinas, and highs are expected to be in the upper 80s Wednesday afternoon.

Foil said athletic events will take place as scheduled.

East Rowan Principal Julie Erdie sent Connect-Ed phone messages to parents of students. She also used Twitter to spread the word.
