FBI investigates vandalism as hate crime

A structure and sign set up by a UNC-Charlotte Jewish group for a religious holiday were damaged and defaced over fall break, and now campus police and the FBI are investigating the incident as a hate crime.

Campus police have no suspects and no witnesses in the case, which was reported Tuesday.

On Oct. 14, a 19-year-old student alerted police to an act of vandalism on campus.

The vandalism happened to a Sukkah – a temporary, symbolic wilderness structure used during the weeklong Jewish festival of Sukkot. It was placed near the campus' Belk Tower by Hillel, a Jewish student group.

According to the police report, someone wrote in small letters "F U" on the back of a sign placed to identify the structure. The Sukkah was also bent out of shape and part of the bamboo roof was missing.

Anyone with information should contact UNC Charlotte campus police at 704-687-2200.
