Authorities charged and arrested a China Grove man on Thursday in the attempted sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl earlier this week in the South Rowan branch of the Rowan County Library.
Terry Lynn Shaunfield, 47, is charged with attempted indecent liberties with a minor, Capt. J.C. Sifford of the Rowan County Sheriff's Office said. Shaunfield was in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $1,500 secured bond this morning.
When sheriff's investigators arrived at the library on Tuesday, they said the girl told them a man she didn't know had approached her and had asked her to engage in some inappropriate behavior.
Investigators said the girl told them she'd seen the man rubbing his groin area while sitting beside her.
The man then got up and began rubbing her back, and then gave her a note asking her to go into the study room to kiss him, investigators said the girl told them. The girl refused and ran out the back door of the library, investigators said.
Library staff identified the suspect from security cameras. Investigator Jason Whitley obtained a warrant on the suspect and served it Thursday at the man's home on Old Beatty Ford Road.
Investigators ask that anyone with information about the case or similar incidents call Whitley at 704-216-8712 or Lt. Chad Moose at 704-216-8687.
