Leaders of four school districts in the Charlotte region are finalists to be named North Carolina's 2010 Superintendent of the Year on Tuesday.

The award, sponsored by the N.C. School Boards Association and the N.C. Association of School Administrators, will be presented in Greensboro. The nine finalists include:

Peter Gorman, who has been superintendent of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools since 2006. His initiatives include moving star principals and teachers into low-performing schools; beefing up reading instruction in early grades; creating a “Parent University” to help parents teach their kids; and making school data more accessible through annual reports and an online database.

Ed Davis, who has worked in Union County schools since 1977 and has been superintendent since 2005. Last year his district had a disproportionately large number of schools earning the highest level of the state's ABC ratings.

Tim Markley of Catawba County Schools, who has been superintendent since 2005.

Jack Hoke, who has led Alexander County Schools since 2000 and started working with the district two years before that.
