Search for rare bird continues

A search team scoured hundreds of acres Friday afternoon trying to find an eagle who escaped from a northwest Mecklenburg County bird rescue center.

They looked for a rare Bateleur eagle that left the Carolina Raptor Center in Huntersville on Thursday, officials said.

On Friday, searchers asked for the public's help. They said they believe the bird remains near the Raptor Center in the Latta Plantation Nature Preserve.

Officials describe the bird as a female with black feathers and blue-gray feathers on the wings. The bird's wingspan is four to five feet.

Staff at the Raptor Center said they worried for the bird's survival because Bateleur eagles have not adapted to North Carolina's climate or habitat.

Officials asked anyone who might have sighted the eagle to call (704) 875-5421 x 107. Those interested in volunteering should report to the visitor's center at Carolina Raptor Center at 6000 Sample Road in Huntersville. Volunteers should bring binoculars and wear clothing suitable for walking in the woods, officials said.
