Cable worker killed in hit-and-run

Police are looking for the driver who they say struck and fatally injured a man overnight on an Alexander County road.

The victim has been identified by the N.C. Highway Patrol as Hank Pittman Jr., 61, a subcontractor who was making repairs on a cable TV line.

Troopers say Pittman called his company at 2 a.m., to report on his whereabouts. About 45 minutes later, troopers say, a motorist spotted a badly injured man in Old Mountain Road, near Smith Farm Road, south of Taylorsville.

That man, identified as Pittman, was rushed to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, but he died a short time later.

Police in Alexander and Iredell counties are on the lookout for a vehicle with damage on the front left side. Troopers say there is evidence that the vehicle also suffered windshield damage -- and that the vehicle was headed toward Iredell County.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call the N.C. Highway Patrol at 828-466-5500.
