A man was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after he was stabbed in the Belmont community just north of uptown Tuesday night.
The victim, who wasn't identified Tuesday night, was wounded in the abdomen at North Davidson and East 17th Streets. He underwent surgery and is in critical condition.
A police spokesperson said the two men involved probably knew each other and that the stabbing happened after they had an argument.
The suspect is described as a tall, heavyset black male about 250 to 300 pounds. He was last seen wearing a red T-shirt and has shoulder-length dreadlocks and dark skin.
Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
Julius Washington, 84, sat outside his one-story blue house Tuesday evening to watch police activity near the crime scene.
Washington has lived in Charlotte for 50 years, mostly in Belmont, and said the neighborhood has been troubled for decades.
“This is a rough neighborhood,” he said, adding that he hears gunshots “night and day. (Criminals) just don't care.”
For protection, he's started carrying a silver .357 Magnum in a brown leather holster on his right hip.
Recently, he said, the police department had started placing an officer just down his street, near the Little Sugar Creek Greenway community garden.
“When he gets off duty, it starts right back up again,” Washington said.
The department has taken other efforts to decrease crime in the neighborhood.
In March, an officer involved in an undercover drug operation was shot at but not injured in Belmont as police stepped up efforts to tackle chronic crime problems.
That incident happened during a 30-day period when federal agents and police focused on gun crimes and drugs in the neighborhood.
