CONCORD Buy a ticket to an October race at Lowe's Motor Speedway and you can determine the winner: a local public high school.
The speedway will donate $10 from each race ticket bought to the public high school of your choice in Cabarrus, Mecklenburg, Iredell or Rowan counties.
School fundraising groups, such as booster clubs and parent-teacher organizations, will receive $10 from each ticket they sell to the Oct. 16 Dollar General 300 and Oct. 17 NASCAR Banking 500 Only from Bank of America races.
The high school that sells the most tickets will be given a 64-person luxury suite at the 2010 NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race next May, for even more fundraising raffle opportunities during the school year.
It's a great way to help public schools in the midst of budget cuts, said Marcus Smith, speedway president and general manager.
The speedway will contribute $1,000 to each of the 40 participating high schools and donate a VIP race package-for-two from The Speedway Club for the school to use as a raffle prize. Bank of America is matching each $1,000 contribution.
The speedway named the effort its “high school homecoming” fundraiser. The October races are a “homecoming” for many NASCAR team members who live in the Charlotte area but who've been on the road for five months, Smith said. The 40 schools serve many of their families, he said.
“It's a wonderful opportunity for our schools to get a little extra money in these hard economic times,” said Ellen Boyd, community relations director for Kannapolis City Schools.
In keeping with the homecoming theme, the speedway has invited area high school bands and cheerleading squads to perform as part of the pre-race show Oct. 17.
