MOORESVILLE Motorists can expect improvements to be in place by next summer at one of the town's most bottlenecked intersections, N.C. 150 at Williamson and Bluefield roads.
Plans call for two left-turn lanes from N.C. 150 onto Williamson, two through-lanes on Bluefield Road to N.C. 150, new medians on N.C. 150 and Bluefield, and more right-turn lane lengths.
Motorists will no longer be able to turn left from the SuperTarget retail center onto Bluefield. Twenty-one wrecks have happened over five years involving drivers making that turn. A hill obscures drivers' views of oncoming southbound cars, town officials said at an open house detailing the planned improvements last week.
The town is partnering with Charlotte developer Pinnacle Properties LLC. The developer is paying the bulk of the cost to compensate for the additional traffic generated at the intersection by its Mooresville Town Square retail center at Williamson and Brawley School roads.
Pinnacle is paying about $600,000, said Kenneth Walsh Jr., Pinnacle's director of development. The town is contributing about $200,000, Mooresville Senior Engineer Allison Kraft said.
Work is expected to begin in early March and take four months, weather permitting. Some work could begin as soon as November, town officials said, although March is more likely.
4-story Hilton planned
A four-story, 99-room Home2 Suites by Hilton plans to open in a couple of years in the Legacy Village mixed-use community beside the Lowe's national headquarters.
The Mooresville Planning Board agreed last week to recommend that the Mooresville Board of Commissioners issue a conditional use permit for the hotel.
The commissioners have scheduled a public hearing on the permit request at their Oct. 5 regular meeting, 6 p.m. at Town Hall, 413 N. Main St. They will consider approving the permit the same night.
Charlotte-based Legacy Village LLC is partnering with GriffinStafford, a Concord-based hotel developer and operator, on the Home2 Suites project. The hotel will be geared to clients of Lowe's and other nearby businesses, rather than overnight travelers, GriffinStafford partner Doug Stafford said.
The Home2 Suites also will be near a planned Charlotte Area Transit System rail line.
Decision on apartments delayed
The Board of Commissioners deferred decisions last week on a rezoning and a subdivision sketch plan for Charlotte developer Bunker Land Group's proposed 456-unit Holly Crest Apartments on Rich Hatchet Road.
Commissioner Brian Sisson called for the delay so commissioner Ken Lucas could also vote. Lucas missed the meeting to be with his wife, who had a medical issue.
The board voted 3-1 to defer the decisions to its Sept. 21 meeting, 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall, 101 Huntersville-Concord Road.
Commissioner Ron Julian voted against the delay, saying he opposes the project because it will worsen traffic on N.C. 73.
The N.C. Board of Transportation in Raleigh intends to let a contract Nov. 5 to widen N.C. 73, Huntersville officials said. But Julian said that project would still take three or four years to complete.
Discovery Place Kids rises
The steel frame of the three-story Discovery Place Kids and town office building recently went up at Gilead Road and N.C. 115 in downtown Huntersville.
Discovery Place Kids will occupy the first two floors and town offices will be on the third floor.
The Huntersville Discovery Place Kids will be the prototype for four or five others in the Charlotte region in the next decade, Discovery Place officials have said.
