The Humane Society of Catawba County and SNIP Regional Spay and Neuter Clinic will honor war veterans with a spay and neuter discount for their pets on Veteran's Day, Nov. 11.
On Nov. 11, a dog spay or neuter will be available for $50, a cat spay will cost $50 and cat neuter will cost $35 for war veterans.
Animals require proof of current rabies vaccination at registration. If proof is not provided, a rabies vaccination is available for $7.
War veterans or their spouses must provide military identification or a DD Form 214 at the clinic to schedule an appointment for their pet's procedure. The clinic is at 3224 20th Ave. S.E. in Hickory. Hours are noon-5:30 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and noon-4 p.m. Saturday. The shelter is closed on Sunday and Monday. Greater Hickory Cooperative Christian Ministry's thrift store also recently donated 60 children's books to D's Lovin' Day Care in Hickory.
The books range from educational textbooks to fiction. About 100 children attend the day care center.

Dr. Gaa Richardson, gastroenterologist, and Ariana Santo, registered dietician, will discuss conditions including gastroesophageal reflux disease, constipation, diarrhea, celiac disease and Crohn's disease. Auditions for Hickory Community Theatre's production of Shakespeare's "Macbeth" will be 7 p.m. Nov. 16-17 at the theater complex, 30 Third St. N.W. in downtown Hickory.
Pamela Livingstone will direct the play. A cast of 15-22 men and women, ages 16 and older, is needed. The actors will be asked to read from scenes in the play. No special preparation is necessary. Taste Full Beans Coffeehouse seeks donations of art from artists of all levels for its eighth annual Aroma of Art benefit auction.
Proceeds from Aroma of Art will benefit the AIDS Leadership Foothills-area Alliance and the Humane Society of Catawba County. Art may be dropped off 5-7 p.m. Jan. 14-16 at Taste Full Beans, 29 Second St. N.W. in Hickory.
The art will be on display at Taste Full Beans throughout February. A kick-off event will be held 5:30-7:30 p.m. Jan. 28, and the finale event will be held 5:30-7:30 p.m. March 4, with bidding ending at 6:30 p.m.

The YMCA of Catawba Valley seeks artwork for its 2009 Christmas Card Art Contest.
The contest is open to YMCA members and program participants ages 12 and younger. Artwork should include the initialism "YMCA." The winner's artwork will be featured on the YMCA 2009 Christmas card.

Newton lawyer Wes Barkley will present a seminar, "Criminal Jurisprudence and Practice." Barkley will discuss the truth behind criminal trial practice, attorney and client relationships, to plea or not to plea, district court versus superior court and jury selection. The N.C. Army National Guard Pvt. 1st Class Cody Huffman has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia.
He is the son of Todd Huffman Conover and Teresa Huffman of Claremont and is a 2009 graduate of Bunker Hill High School in Claremont.
