Students from Hickory Public Schools, Catawba County Schools and Newton-Conover City Schools were recently selected by audition for All-County Band.
All-County Band students will rehearse on Nov. 20 and perform at 2 p.m. Nov. 21 at the Arts and Science Center, 243 Third Ave. N.E., Hickory. The event is free and open to the public.

Salem Elementary fifth-graders recently finished a five-week study of mysteries with a mystery dinner theater performed by their teachers.
Salad, lasagna and cake were served. In between courses, students and their families tried to solve the unfolding mystery. Vocabulary words and literary terms studied during the unit were woven into the drama.
At the end of the evening, students shared with their parents mystery books they wrote and illustrated.
Caldwell County
Lower Creek Elementary School was recently recognized for having the most physically fit student body in the state and the nation for enrollment of 200 to 500 students.
The President's Challenge Physical Fitness and Sports Award was presented to the school based on results of the President's Physical Fitness Challenge. Nearly 90 percent of students at Lower Creek met the fitness challenge requirement.
Catawba County
Catawba County Schools and Champions of Education will sponsor the third annual Walk in My Shoes Day on Nov. 19. Business leaders are invited to shadow teachers, principals and senior administrators for the day. To participate, call Carleen Crawford at 828-695-2692.
Catawba County seventh-graders learned the importance of science and math recently when an entertaining program designed by NASA and Honeywell visited River Bend Middle.
FMA Live - which stands for Force, Motion, Action - blended science and hip-hop music with high-action songs, videos and demonstrations. The unique, fast-paced show has won several national awards.
Bandys High School will host a financial aid night at 6 p.m. Monday in the media center.
Skip Watts from the College Foundation of North Carolina and Laurie Wegner, CVCC director of admissions, will speak.
Parents and students are encouraged to attend the information session.
Mountain View Elementary School will host a support group for parents and teachers of students with autism from 3:10 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
Meetings include informational speakers, problem-solving brainstorms, insightful stories and inspirational support.

Newton-Conover
The Newton School was recently awarded a $1,000 grant from Polymask Co. in Conover, a division of the 3M Corp.
The grant was designed to support growing innovative high schools. Funds will be used to develop a more functional chemistry and physical science lab.
