The York County Regional Chamber's Rock Hill Area Council will host the 2008 Rock Hill Education Awards Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Nov. 21. The council will honor local students and teachers of the year from area public, private and higher-learning institutions. The cost to attend is $18 and is payable at the door.The breakfast will be at The Connection, 2538 W. Main St.

More students in South Carolina passed the state's high school

exit exam on their first attempts this year than last, according to the state's Education Department.

Four out of five S.C. 10th-graders passed both sections of the exit exam by scoring at Level 2 or higher on the test's four achievement levels. This year's average passing rate of 80.8 percent, the state's highest to date, was a 3.7 percent improvement over 2007.

Winthrop University's men's soccer senior Ben Kieffner has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District 3 First Team.

Kieffner, business administration major with a 3.8 grade point average, was one of 30 candidates for the Lowe's Senior Class Award earlier this year and last year was named to the NSCAA/Adidas All-South Region Academic Second Team. He also was on the 2007 Big South Conference Academic Team.

Sullivan Middle School's Stars of the Week are as follows:

Sixth grade: Abraham Garcia, Alexis Garcia and Avery Gladstone.

Seventh grade: Michael Cranford, Danielle Dowling, Sadashia Lindsey and Jennifer Towery.

Eighth grade: AJ Lahr, Lupita Guerrero.

North Elementary will hold its Scholastic Book Fair through Nov. 24 in the media center. Students can visit the book fair during school and after school until 2:30 p.m. Book Fair Family Night will be Nov. 17.
