Providence High will perform 'Macbeth'
Providence High School will present Shakespeare's "Macbeth" Thursday through Sunday.
To prepare the students for the play, superstitiously referred to as "the Scottish play," director Catherine McDougall partnered with local theatre professionals and Kevin Coleman, director of Education, Shakespeare & Company at Lenox, Ma. They focused on intensive stage combat, sword-fighting and drama. Shows times are 7 p.m. in the Providence High auditorium. The school is at 1800 Pineville-Matthews Road. General admission seats are $7 and available one hour before each performance at the school's auditorium. Details: 980-343-5390.

Gloria Haney, volunteer services coordinator for the Union County Department of Social Services and head of the Union County Christmas Bureau, says 2009 is shaping up to be the Christmas Bureau's biggest year ever.
The bureau began taking applications on Oct. 26. More than 150 families applied that day. The Christmas Bureau helps needy families during the holidays. The office is at 1416 Skyway Drive.
"We've taken 760 applications so far, and that's just in six days," Haney told Union County commissioners last week. "We typically only take about 2,000 each year."
Haney said the bureau needs money, new and gently used toys, nonperishable food, sponsors for children and families and a permanent facility of at least 20,000 square feet. Donations must be made before Dec. 11. Details: 704-292-2980.
