Election filings start Monday

While some people have declared their intentions already, they'll have to pay fees to make it official.

Monday marks the start of election season for municipalities, including the south Charlotte suburbs.

Every municipality in Union County has council, commissioner or mayoral races. Some candidates declared their intentions to run last week, but filing fees have to be paid before it's official.

In Indian Trail, newcomers Vince Howard and Robert Allen have declared their intentions to run for town council. The seats of council members Shirley Howe and Dan Schallenkamp will be open in November. Howe and Schallenkamp have not officially announced whether they will seek re-election.

In Stallings, Mayor Lynda Paxton said she will seek re-election.

Matthews Mayor Lee Myers announced last week that he will not seek re-election. The day after Myers' announcement, Matthews' Mayor Pro Tem Jim Taylor said he will seek the mayor's seat.

Here is a breakdown of races:

Union County

Fairview: two council seats.

Hemby Bridge: two board of alderman seats.

Indian Trail: two council seats.

Lake Park: mayor and two council seats.

Marshville: mayor and two council seats.

Marvin: mayor and two council seats.

Mineral Springs: mayor and three council seats.

Monroe: mayor and three council seats.

Stallings: mayor and four council seats.

Unionville: mayor and two board of commissioner seats.

Waxhaw: three board of commissioner seats.

Weddington: mayor and two council seats.

Wesley Chapel: mayor and two council seats.

Wingate: two board of commissioner seats.

Filing closes for Union County races on July 17. Monroe's municipal elections are Oct. 6. All other elections in Union County are Nov. 3. For more information and for a complete elections schedule, visit www.co.union.nc.us.

Mecklenburg County

Charlotte: mayor, four at-large council seats and seven district seats.

Charlotte Mecklenburg School Board: six seats.

Matthews: mayor and six board of commissioners seats.

Mint Hill: mayor and four board of commissioners seats.

Pineville: mayor and four board of commissioners seats.

Filing closes for Mecklenburg County races on July 17. The primary election, for those races that require one, will be Sept. 15. The Matthews primary will be Oct. 6. The general election is Nov. 3. For more information, visit

York County

Candidates packets are available in the city of Sharon, according to the York County Government Web site. Candidate filings for municipal races in Rock Hill, Clover, Fort Mill and Tega Cay, and for the school board race in Fort Mill, happen later this summer.
