The league also will host forums in October for Indian Trail, Marshville and Wesley Chapel candidates.

York County

United Way of York County hopes to raise $1.9 million this year to help its partner agencies, and officials are optimistic it can happen despite a lingering weak economy.

Agency officials announced the fundraising goal last week during a breakfast at the Springs Dairy Barn in Fort Mill and said they're hopeful people who've managed to escape the worst of the recession will step up to help others who've not been as fortunate.

“I think people in the community realize the need is great,” said Harvey Hawkins, campaign chairman. “In cases like that, people always dig deep.”

The $1.9 million goal is the same as last year. United Way fell short of that goal by about $300,000.
