Pineville is considering limiting or prohibiting individuals' sale of cars in commercial areas of the town.

Councilman Les Gladden raised the issue because of concerns about the number of cars for sale along key corridors of town, particularly Polk Street.

Pineville Town Administrator Mike Rose says in addition to being unsightly, cars for sale on vacant lots or in front of vacant buildings are cause for crime and safety issues.

He says that often the vehicles aren't really for sale by individuals. Used-car dealers use this method to skirt legal, financial and ethical obligations licensed dealers are required to meet.

Several N.C. communities have ordinances that deal with the issue, including Harrisburg, which prohibits it completely. The council directed Rose to draft an ordinance for the October meeting.

The council also:

Authorized Rose to enter into an agreement with developers of Carolina Crossing to take over street maintenance in that neighborhood once necessary repairs have been made.

Passed a resolution so the town can participate in CONNECT Regional Vision Plan, a program that will facilitate planning and communication in the Greater Charlotte Bi-State region that includes 17 counties in both Carolinas.
