Aleshia Bennett

Age: 21.

Hometown: Charlotte.

Occupation: Administrative assistant.

Charity that helped: Bennett shared her story during the Community Health Services luncheon on Thursday. She was pregnant, didn't have any insurance and needed to learn about prenatal care and parenting. She enrolled in Community Health Services' Nurse Family Partnership. She was assigned a personal nurse who came to her home. The nurse provided preventative health services and gave Bennett lots of information about childbirth, parenting and postpartum depression. She also became Bennett's friend.

"There's not really an instruction booklet that comes with kids. I felt really prepared with my nurse," Bennett said.

Without CHS? During the pregnancy, Bennett had premature contractions and her nurse urged her to go to the doctor immediately. Bennett said the doctor told her if she had waited any longer to seek help, the hospital would not have been able to stop the contractions. Her son would have been born five months into her pregnancy.
