Area Memorial Day events to honor war dead

U.S. military members – especially those who gave their lives in defense of our country – will be remembered across the Charlotte metro region this Memorial Day weekend, with speeches, music, prayers and 21-gun salutes.

U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick of Charlotte will make two appearances Monday, at ceremonies in Monroe and in Gastonia.

TODAY'S EVENTS

York County, S.C. (Lakeview Cemetery, U.S. 321, between Clover and York): 4 p.m.; program sponsored by American Legion posts of Fort Mill, Rock Hill and York .

Charlotte (Forest Lawn West Cemetery, 4601 Freedom Drive): 11a.m.; organizers say the event will feature a special tribute to all veterans.

Gastonia (Gaston Memorial Park, 1200 S. New Hope Road): 1p.m.; program features guest speaker U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick.

Historic Brattonsville (1444 Brattonsville Road, McConnells, S.C.): 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; 19th-century militia muster and firearms demonstrations, children's toys and games; $6 ($5 for people 65 or older; $3, ages 4-17; free, 3 and younger); 803-684-2327; www.chmuseums.org.

Kannapolis (Village Park, between West A and C streets): 11:55 a.m.; program of music and speeches, including guest speaker Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton.

Monroe (Lakeland Memorial Park, 1901 Lancaster Ave.): 9a.m.; program features guest speaker Myrick.

Statesville concert (Mitchell Community College, 500 W. Broad St.): 6 p.m.; Mitchell Community College Band performs patriotic music; outdoors in front of campus (bring picnic baskets and lawn chairs).
