Here's the basic information about ski slopes in the Southeast. Contact them directly for weather information, rate changes and discounts. Note: Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend is Jan. 15 or 16 through Jan. 18; Presidents Day weekend is Feb. 12 or 13 through Feb. 15.

North Carolina

APPALACHIAN SKI MOUNTAIN

Location: Off U.S. 321, near the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Lay of the land: Slopes: 10. Base elevation: 3,635 feet. Vertical drop: 365 feet. Skiable acres: 25. Terrain: 20 percent beginner, 30 percent intermediate, 30 percent advanced (20 percent is freestyle terrain). Lifts: 2 quad chairs, 1 double chair, 1 conveyor, 1 handle-tow.

Lift tickets: (Weekdays) $35; $28 for high school and college students; $27 for 12 and younger, 60 and older and military and military spouse/children (with ID); (Saturday/Sunday/holiday) $52; $38 for 12 and younger and 60 and older and military; (6-10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday) $21; $18 for students; $16 for 12 and younger, 60 and older and military; (6-10 p.m. Friday/Saturday/holiday) $28; $20 for 12 and younger, 60 and older, and military; $24 for students. CATALOOCHEE SKI AREA

Location: Off Interstate 40, in Maggie Valley.

Lay of the land: Slopes: 14. Base elevation: 4,600 feet. Vertical drop: 740 feet. Skiable acres: 50. Terrain: 25 percent beginner, 50 percent intermediate, 25 percent advanced. Lifts: 1 quad chair, 1 triple chair, 1 double chair, 3 conveyors.

Lift tickets: (Weekdays) $33; $29 for high school and college students (with ID); $26 for ages 5-12; free for 65 and older and 4 and younger with a ticketed adult; (Saturday-Sunday/holiday) $53; $43 for ages 5-12. Holiday rates: Dec. 19-Jan. 2, plus MLK and Presidents Day weekends.

HAWKSNEST TUBING

Location: Off N.C. 105, south of Boone.

Lay of the land: Base elevation: 4,095 feet. 20 tubing lanes (400 to 1,000 feet long); skiing has been discontinued. Lifts: 2 moving carpet conveyors.

Cost (per session): (Weekdays) $22; (Saturday-Sunday/holiday) $31. $30 for two weekday sessions. Holiday rates: Dec. 21-Jan. 1, plus MLK and Presidents weekends.

SCALY MOUNTAIN

Location: On N.C. 106 (Dillard Road), southwest of Highlands.

Lay of the land: Slopes: 1. Base elevation: 3,800 feet. Vertical drop: 100 feet. No skiing; tubing and ice skating only. Lifts: 1 rope-tow.

Lift tickets: Tubing, $22 for two-hour session; ice skating, $10 for one--hour session. Dec. 18-Jan. 3, weather permitting. Hours: 9 a.m.-9 p.m. weekdays; 4-9 p.m. Fridays; 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturdays, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sundays. Jan. 4-March 1 open only Friday-Sunday plus Jan. 18 and Feb. 15 (MLK and Presidents weekends).
