Prep Observations: The day after

Last week, Panthers receiver Steve Smith was coach for a day at Lake Norman High. Friday night, Lake Norman upset Mooresville 17-7, beating its arch-rivals for the first time. Sully Shidler, a kicker who won a writing contest that brought Smith to campus, had a field goal and two extra points. His mother, Kathy, said Smith's instruction made a big difference in the biggest win in school history at Lake Norman (5-2). “We feel our winning is due in part to (Smith's) inspirational visit on Tuesday,” Kathy Shidler said. “…His lessons of accountability and candor, honestly sharing his experiences, both on and off the field, with our boys, plus his great attitude surely helped to propel our team to a victory. …”

Some Vance fans or students apparently littered Mallard Creek's field before Friday's rivalry game. When Mallard Creek opened last year, it did so with a good many Vance students. But the Cougars didn't need to give Mallard Creek extra motivation. It was good, though, that Vance finally gave Mallard Creek a close game. The Mavericks' 24-14 win will only make a good team better.

How about Garinger? Next week, East Mecklenburg at Butler and Christian at Country Day are your big games, but who would've guessed that the Wildcats, who have won two in a row – after losing 61 straight on the field – would be playing at Charlotte Catholic for first place in the Queen City?

The past three weeks, South Meck has lost by exactly 28 points. The Sabres still have the talent to make a playoff run, but might need to play some players on offense and defense, particularly in the defensive backfield.

After an 0-2 start, Providence coach Randy Long's team has won four of five. The Panthers gave up 35 points to Butler, but the team has beaten the other four by a total of 82-20. Independence is next.
