A 40-year-old Mint Hill man faces several felony charges after being arrested late Wednesday in connection with a drug bust.

Michael MacConnell was taken into custody after police searched his home on Lawyers Road. Mint Hill police said they found about 300 marijuana plants growing in the home.

They also said they discovered chemicals that could be used for producing drugs.

The house, in the 11100 block of Lawyers Road, is within walking distance of Mint Hill City Hall and not far from the town's police department.

Local, state and federal authorities worked through the night at the house, carting away boxes of chemicals and other materials. Mint Hill police Chief Tim Ledford called it "the largest operation I have seen in my career."

WBTV is reporting that the bust started when a man came to the Mint Hill police station and complained of being assaulted at his home. As part of the investigation, officers went to MacConnell's home. During a search, they said they discovered the marijuana plants.

A state chemist was called into the case, as authorities tried to determine whether other illegal activities might be taking place at the residence.

MacConnell remained in a Mecklenburg County jail late Thursday, held under $36,000 bond. He has an initial court appearance scheduled Friday afternoon.
