A 59-year-old Hudson resident and her teen granddaughter were killed this weekend when the golf cart they were in was struck by a car.
The incident happened around 7 p.m. Saturday near the town of Hudson in Caldwell County, which is about 70 miles northwest of Charlotte.
Trooper T.C. Williams of the N.C. Highway Patrol said 15-year-old Kara Chandler of Granite Falls was driving a golf cart and trying to cross Hickory Nut Ridge Road when the cart was struck by a car driven by Kevin Mays, 19, of Granite Falls. Mays has not been charged in the wreck, which remains under investigation.
The teen and her grandmother, Karen Smith, were ejected from the golf cart and died at the scene, Williams said. Chandler's twin, Cressinda, was also in the cart and was flown to Carolinas Medical Center after the wreck. She is expected to survive.
Preliminary reports indicate there were two pick-up trucks traveling north on Hickory Nut Ridge Road, and Williams said it is possible that Chandler did not see Mays' car, which was traveling in the opposite direction, as she pulled into the intersection.
Most areas in the state don't allow golf carts to be driven on roadways. Williams said he believes the family was headed to Smith's house after feeding cows at a nearby pasture.
