Burke County District Court judge John Mull drowned Sunday in the Catawba River near a home his family was building in the Glen Alpine community, said Sheriff John McDevitt.
McDevitt said Mull jumped in the water to rescue his 17-year-old son, who was experiencing cramps. "He got him out, and then they turned around and the judge was gone," McDevitt said. The son and a friend jumped in after Mull, who was submerged for about 45 seconds, the sheriff said. They called 911 and recuers administered CPR on the way to the hospital, but were not able to revive him.
The judge heard cases for Burke, Caldwell and Catawba counties. No other details were available late Sunday night.
