This weekend will be the one year anniversary of the day Marsh and I got engaged! We had a rather short engagement, only seven months, so it’s crazy to think about all that has happened in a year. Our engagement was kept on the shorter side for a few reasons. We had been together for six years, and had a house and a dog, so we had already been “living in sin” for a little bit. For us, having a long engagement just didn’t seem necessary.
Marshal’s proposal was probably the best day of my life to date. I know you’re probably wondering why our actual wedding day wasn’t the best day of my life. It’s a close second, I promise you. But in all honesty, the day that Marsh got down on one knee, told me how much he loved me, and asked me to be with him forever was the happiest moment I’ve ever experienced. As soon as you get engaged, you are immediately thrown into a whirlwind of new emotions, plans and experiences. You almost lose sight of the actual proposal and what it means. You don’t think about how long your fiancé had been planning it, or how many times he had rehearsed what he wanted to say to you. And your fiancé certainly doesn’t realize that because you’re so excited about what’s happening to you, you barely listen to what he’s saying. The proposal in and of itself is so sacred, so special and such a huge moment in your life. But it tends to get lost in a sea of phone calls and wedding planning. It’s as if the proposal is the gunshot that sends us off to the races. Instead of it being celebrated as it’s own special moment, it gets tied into the excitement of what’s to come. Just last year I wished my friend a “Happy Engagement Anniversary,” and she had no clue that it was the day her fiancé had proposed to her. I vowed to make that different for me and Marsh. Not only do I think it’s important to establish traditions within your newlywed life, I think it’s good to choose moments that are significant to you, not just typical moments that you think should be celebrated. That’s why we decided to celebrate our engagement anniversary every year. It’s obvious that we will celebrate our wedding day, as that is the day that made us official and legally legit, but we find it just as important to recognize the day that started it all. The day that we knew we would become husband and wife. So we are headed back to Biltmore, where we got engaged, to celebrate the day that started our forever, and to begin important traditions within our relationship.Carolina Bride welcomes your comments, but do keep it civil.
