Charlotte Catholic beat Providence Day 35-23 Saturday and made a big jump up the Observer’s Sweet 16 high school football poll that measures the top teams in the newspaper’s coverage area.

Observer’s Sweet 16 preseason football rankings: It probably won’t surprise too many people who follow high school football locally that Mallard Creek starts the season No. 1.

For years, the epicenter of Mecklenburg County soccer was in the south and southeast, where powers such as Charlotte Catholic, East Mecklenburg, South Mecklenburg, Myers Park and Providence annually battled for conference supremacy – and often the right to advance to regional and state championships. Now, that power appears to be shifting.

Here are the final Sweet 16 polls for high school girls soccer, baseball and softball teams.

Freedom Patriots finished 31-1 and won the N.C. 3A championship.

Nationally ranked Myers Park is the 2013-14 Observer Sweet 16 girls’ basketball champion.
