With future uncertain, how useful is driver’s education?

The future of driver’s education is still unclear as state lawmakers continue to haggle over a budget. Senate leaders want to stop funding the program and possibly do away with requiring it for 16- and 17-year-olds to get a license. Many assume driver’s ed turns out safer drivers, but research shows that’s not necessarily true.

After 70 years, Jim Geer retired Sunday from teaching his Fellowship Warriors Sunday school class at Woodlawn Baptist Church. Geer, who's almost 94, became a Sunday school teacher after serving with U.S. Army Gen. George Patton’s 2nd Armored Division in World War II. One night in a foxhole in France, he promised God he'd do whatever the Lord wanted if he made it back home alive.
