Observations: Bobcats lowest in NBA on fouls

By Rick Bonnell

The Bobcats always have seen themselves as the underdog team that never gets the referees' respect. Maybe that's changing: Through four games, they were charged with the fewest fouls per game (19.25) of any team in the NBA.

That seemed to surprise coach Larry Brown when I mentioned it to him Friday. And he didn't have much to say, perhaps thinking back to that huge preseason fine for allegedly publicly criticizing the replacement referees.

You have to love all those free throws Gerald Wallace's drives are generating, but there is a downside. Wallace has had his shot blocked 13 times during the first five games.

Friday was the first game this season when Brown had to de-activate two players. Interesting decision not to dress big men Alexis Ajinca and Gana Diop.

Brown said the inactives would change from game-to-game, based partially on matching up with opponents. Still, it makes a bit of a statement that Brown would go with rookie Derrick Brown over either of those big men.

Boris Diaw occasionally is overpassing. At least three times Friday he gave up good shots and ended up giving someone else an inferior shot. Classic example: He passed up a 3-footer for a bounce pass to D.J. Augustin cutting through the lane.
