A Watauga County man has been sentenced to five years in prison for his role in a methamphetamine operation in northwest North Carolina, federal authorities say.
The Justice Department said U.S. District Court Judge Richard Voorhees has sentenced Matthew Wayne Rayfield, 25, of Sugar Grove in Watauga County, to the prison term and four years' probation. Another man, Jon Darrell Baker, 35, of Johnson City, Tenn., was sentenced earlier this year to more than eight years in prison for his role in the operation.
According to court documents, Rayfield and Baker participated in the methamphetamine manufacturing conspiracy for a little more than two months in late 2007 and early 2008 in Watauga County. Each man entered a guilty plea to several charges, the Justice Department said.
