Lincoln County sheriff's deputies have arrested a man in two separate theft cases in which, authorities say, a thief apparently neglected to erase footage of the victims' families. That footage led to the arrest, deputies say.
The first case happened Aug. 30, when someone broke into a residence on Buffalo Run, off Buffalo Shoals Road, and took a Sony Handycam, two gaming consoles and jewelry. Three days later, the Sony Handycam was found at Boger City Pawn Shop, deputies say.
According to the sheriff's office, the camera was pawned under the name of Joshua Jazreel Duncan, 20, of Lincolnton.
“Upon viewing the footage on the camera, it was discovered the victim's residence and family members were on the footage,” said Detective Sally Dellinger of the sheriff's office.
Then on Sept. 10, someone broke into a home on Woolie Road, taking a number of electronic items, including a video camera, and jewelry. Eight days later, deputies say, Duncan entered Boger City Pawn Shop and tried unsuccessfully to pawn a video camera.
A Lincolnton police officer was in the pawn shop at the time and recognized Duncan as a suspect in several breaking-and-entering cases, the sheriff's office said. A short time later, Duncan was stopped and the stolen camera discovered, deputies say.
A men's gold wedding band stolen in the Sept. 10 case was pawned under Joshua Duncan's name at the pawn shop, the sheriff's office added.
Duncan has been charged with obtaining property by false pretense; felony breaking, entering and larceny; and possession of stolen goods.
