Payton

A man arrested last month for a string of sexual assaults at a south Charlotte apartment complex has been charged with another rape in addition to an attempted rape, police said Wednesday.

Phillip George Payton, 20, was a resident of the Yorktown Gardens apartments off Tyvola Road near South Boulevard. He's accused of breaking into four of his neighbors' apartments and sexually assaulted them over more than a year.

Police said DNA evidence tied Payton to sexual assaults in February and September when they arrested him last month. He was charged with second-degree rape, second-degree sex offense, kidnapping, assault on a female and first degree burglary.

He has no previous criminal record in North Carolina, according to court records.

Now police say that lab results have tied Payton to an October rape, in which a woman reported that a man broke apartment through a rear sliding glass door and attacked her at about 8 a.m.

They've also charged him with an unsolved attack at Yorktown from June 2008. The victim in that case reported that a man climbed through her window, pointed a gun at her and attempted to rape her.

Payton faces new charges of second-degree rape, attempted first-degree rape, assault on a child under 12 and burglary. He's being held in Mecklenburg Jail on more than $600,000 bond.
