New high schools in Mint Hill and Cornelius will get their official names at Tuesday's school board meeting.
A panel of parents, students, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools employees and community members recommends Rocky River High for the school in Mint Hill. The name reflects a river that runs through the feeder area and a road that leads toward the school.
Allen Station (for a train station that was in the area from the 1920s to the 1950s) and Blair Road (an old name for part of N.C. 51) are suggested as alternates.
A similar panel studying the Cornelius school recommends naming it W.A. Hough High, after a principal who led nearby North Mecklenburg High from 1955 to 1974. Backup suggestions are Unity and Rocky River.
The Observer recently reported on Central High alumni efforts to get one of the schools named for Ed Sanders, a former principal who lives in the Alzheimer's unit of Southminster Retirement Community. CMS policy says schools can be named only for people who have died, and Sanders did not make either list of recommendations.
Both schools will open in August.
Also Tuesday, the school board will vote on a motion to provide transportation for seniors at East Mecklenburg, Butler, West Charlotte and Hopewell high schools who choose to stay at those schools next year, rather than moving because of boundary changes for the two schools. The motion says previous CMS votes left it unclear whether those students would qualify for bus rides.
