A Union County teacher was surprised Tuesday morning by two Carolina Panthers players and utility company officials, who presented her with a $1,866 grant during a school assembly.
Third-grade teacher Ann Landwehr, of Kensington Elementary School near Waxhaw, and the rest of her team submitted an application for a Bright Ideas grant through Union Power Cooperative. The teachers proposed to launch a project, “Pen Pals Around the World,” in which they would exchange letters and photographs with students in east Africa.
North Carolina's energy cooperatives are presenting more than a half million dollars in grants to teachers this month, with each grant for up to $2,000.
Participating in this morning's assembly at Kensington Elementary were Panthers' players Captain Munnerlyn and Sherrod Martin.
