Pedestrian killed near I-485

Police say a pedestrian was struck and killed Thursday evening as he walked along North Tryon Street near Interstate 485 in north Charlotte.

The name of the victim has not been released, as police are trying to determine his identity.

Traffic in the area is being slowed this morning by a downed power pole and malfunctioning traffic signals. It is not clear if the problem is related to the collision involving the pedestrian.

The collision happened about 8:20 p.m., police say, in the 11700 block of North Tryon Street, a short distance north of I-485.

Police say a man was walking in the left northbound lane of North Tryon Street, wearing dark clothing. He was hit by a Time-Warner Cable van driving in that lane, police say. The victim was thrown about 70 feet and was declared dead at the scene.

The man was not carrying any identification, police say.

No charges have been filed in the case.

The traffic signals at North Tryon and I-485 are not working this morning. It means motorists getting off the outer loop of I-485 are having a very difficult time turning left (inbound) on North Tryon.
