Crane removal closes Church St.

By Steve Lyttle

Evening commuters accustomed to using South Church and South Tryon streets in Charlotte's uptown will have to find a detour Friday evening.

City officials say a portion of Church Street and Tryon Street are closed through Sunday, while crews remove a tower crane from the Wachovia Office Tower complex under construction.

The two uptown streets were closed at 9 a.m. Friday between First and Stonewall streets. Charlotte transportation officials say they estimate it will take three days to move the crane.

The posted detours:

Church Street: Turn right at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, left on Mint Street, left on Stonewall Street, then right on Church Street. But city officials encourage motorists headed to the John Belk Freeway to use Third and Caldwell streets as alternate routes.

Tryon Street: Southbound motorists will use the same detour as Church Street motorists. Northbound motorists are being detoured onto Stonewall and College streets.
