Some of North Carolina's top amateur soccer players will be in Charlotte this weekend for the quarterfinals and semifinals of the annual N.C. Adult State Cup.
Games are scheduled Saturday and Sunday, with men's teams playing at Elon Park in southern Mecklenburg County and women's games at Elon Park and the Bramblewood Soccer Complex in southwest Charlotte.
The winners from Sunday's semifinals will meet for the state championship in several weeks at a site to be determined.
Four Charlotte-area teams are in the eight-team men's field – Attic Football Club, made up mostly of former Queens University of Charlotte players; Premier Football Club, featuring ex-college players from across the Southeast; Sporting Charlotte, also featuring players from across the Southeast; and Tigres de Carolina, a Monroe-based team of Latino players. Rounding out the field are teams from Boone, Raleigh, Durham and Asheville.
Premier Football Club is first in the Charlotte Premier Soccer League this fall, but the other three Charlotte-area teams are among the league's leaders.
“People who come out will see some very good players and teams,” said Chad Rogers, captain of Sporting Charlotte and co-chairman of the Charlotte Premier Soccer League. “A few players made it to the pro level.”
Sporting Charlotte will represent the Charlotte area in the women's tournament, joining teams from Raleigh and the Greensboro area.
Rogers said Sporting Charlotte is defending state champion.
Games are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The tournament will be played rain or shine.
