World War II veteran Robert Comito's ashes were supposed to be spread across the N.C. sky.

Instead, the plastic box with the ashes ended up in a 5-inch crater in a Davie County yard, WXII-TV reported. Sheriff's Capt. J.D. Hartman said if the box had hit anyone on the way down, it likely would have killed them.

Comito's son said he is angry at the Collings Foundation, which was supposed to spread the ashes as part of a local airplane exhibition. He thinks what happened was disrespectful to his father's memory.

The foundation said the ashes are supposed to be given to it in a cardboard box so they will disperse easily, and they wouldn't have accepted the remains if they knew they were in a plastic box. Associated Press

Officials at the South Carolina Aquarium say they made a $1.1 million profit the first nine months of the year and will soon pay off the remaining debt from its opening nearly 10 years ago.

Officials credit a new exhibit called Penguin Planet for a 12-percent increase in aquarium visitors this year.

Aquarium President and Chief Executive Kevin Mills said the attraction needs just a few more key donors to pay the last of the $12 million debt the aquarium picked up when it opened in 2000.

Mills said the attraction will use the extra cash from the payoff of the debt and the increase in visitors for pay raises as well as new paint, carpet and equipment. (Charleston) Post & Courier
