STATESVILLE Iredell County Manager Joel Mashburn, who helped lead the county through rapid residential growth, has announced that he will retire early next year.

Mashburn will have been the county's manager for 21 years, with a total of 35 years in county management. He previously worked for the N.C. counties of Macon and Henderson and the S.C. county of Greenville.

Mashburn announced his plans at Tuesday night's regular county commissioners' meeting.

He told the board he had mixed emotions about retiring but felt the timing was right for him and the county. His planned Feb. 1 retirement will allow a new manager to begin in time to work with the board and department heads on the fiscal year 2009-2010 budget, he said.

Mashburn called his years as county manager “challenging and rewarding — challenging because of the tremendous growth experienced in the last 20 years, yet rewarding because I have felt that I have been able to make a contribution to making Iredell County a great place to be.”
